People’s deputy from the “European Solidarity” party, Victoria Syumar, cannot explain the source of her income, which would allow her to build an estate near Kyiv and pay for her daughter’s education in London. Syumar tried to hide the property by registering it in the name of her mother Lidia Melnyk. And now the official husband of Victoria Syumar, official Dmytro Hrystiuk, was accused of embezzling budget funds.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Elite estates, the purchase of property at an undervalued price, profits of unknown origin \u2014 we are used to knowing all this about old-style politicians, against whom, in particular, people in 2013 came to the Euromaidan. Among them was today’s People’s Deputy Victoria Syumar, who after the revolution went from journalism to politics. Society looked at people like her with expectations that really new faces with new values \u200b\u200band approaches came to power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But, as you know, after killing a dragon, the main thing is not to become one yourself. “Maidan was supposed to give birth to a new personnel generation, but it did not give birth to it,” Victoria Syumar herself once said in an interview<\/a>. Judging by the fact that it will be discussed further below, she did not change anything in this regard and by her own example.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What Victoria Syumar did for a living before the Maidan<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Viktoriya Syumar grew up in the village of Pogrebyshchi, Vinnytsia region, where she lived in a two-room apartment with her parents, who worked at a sugar factory. As the people’s deputy herself told, they lived in poverty, there was not enough money, so as a child she sold sour cream and cheese at the market in Kozyatyn to collect money for her studies. After graduating from Shevchenko KNU, Syumar got a job as a history teacher in one of the Kyiv schools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I got money when I started working for the Voice of America in the 1990s and had an “American” salary. I did not spend this money. When a certain amount was collected, I decided that it should be invested somewhere,” Syumar said<\/a> in an interview.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The future deputy invested her journalistic salary in such a business: she found unfinished cottages, paid a construction crew and materials, completed them and sold them. “It settled down and became a business at the same time as working on the Voice of America. I was able to buy an apartment, a car.” And this was the only business journalist Syumar was engaged in. For the rest of her life, she is either a hired manager or a civil servant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Before the Maidan, in 2013-2014, Viktoria Syumar worked in the “Shuster Live” program on the “Ukraine” TV channel, as a presenter on “Channel 5”, a teacher at the T.G. Shevchenko Institute of Journalism of KNU, as well as the executive director of the NGO “Institute of Mass Information”. . The journalist was “thrown” into big politics by the Revolution of Dignity, after which she became the deputy secretary of the National Security and Defense Council. In the 2014 parliamentary elections, Syumar came in 7th place on the list of the People’s Front party and was elected as a People’s Deputy, a position she has held for the past 10 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How Syumar tried to hide her estate near Kyiv with the help of her mother Lidia Melnyk<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Immediately after entering politics and being elected to the parliament, the former journalist’s business took off. So much so that in 2016, in the village of Mykhailivka-Rubezhivka, 16 km from Kyiv, in the middle of the forest, Syumar began a large-scale construction of her elite estate: on two plots of land totaling almost half a hectare, she had her own lake and a 216-square-meter house.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Journalists and activists of the Chesno civic movement (co-founded, ironically, by Viktoriia Syumar) discovered that the MP was living in a mansion that she had not included in her declaration in 2018. At that time, photos of Syumar and her then-roommate Dmytro Khrystiuk’s new estate began to appear on social media.<\/p>\n\n\n

The land and the house were registered not to Syumar, but to Lidiya Melnyk, the MP’s mother. At the same time, Lidia Melnyk was never seen in any of the photos of the estate, which means that Syumar and Khrystiuk obviously lived there alone. And Lidia Melnyk simply had no money for such a mansion with its own lake: according<\/a> to the State Fiscal Service, Lidia Melnyk, a former sugar factory worker, worked at the State Seed Inspectorate from 1997 to 2013, and had no official income from 2013 to 2018. She has never been involved in business either, so it is obvious that she could not have had the money to buy half a hectare of land near Kyiv and build a large house from scratch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
