How many Ukrainian journalists can afford a luxurious 300-square-meter house in a picturesque location in the woods near a lake near Kyiv? Almost every media worker would probably be very surprised by this question. After all, the average media in Ukraine, especially in recent years – during the coronavirus pandemic and now Russia’s full-scale war against Ukraine – has been surviving rather than thriving. And in general, journalism in Ukraine has never been a field in which you can make good money. Especially not enough to buy an elite house worth hundreds of thousands of dollars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But, of course, this is if we are talking about people who honestly live on one salary, and do not sell their services, as officials often do. The salaries of journalists are very, very modest, ranging from 10 to 30 thousand hryvnias a month on average. If we talk about the top positions of editors-in-chief, it can be even higher, up to 50 thousand UAH. But it’s definitely not the kind of money you can use to build or buy a two-story house near Kyiv.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But 1+1 TV channel employee Yevhen Plinsky somehow managed to do it. Today, he is a presenter at the United News TV marathon, and before the war, he hosted the investigative journalism project Secret Materials on the 2+2 TV channel of the same 1+1 media group owned by Ihor Kolomoisky. And it was at this time, in 2020, that Plinsky, to the envy of his colleagues, became the happy owner of a two-story cottage in a cottage community on the territory of the Lesnaya Skazka garden society near the village of Kruglik, 10 km from Kyiv, along with a 2000-square-meter plot of land right next to the forest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 294.4-square-meter house at 10 Malyovnycha Street and the 0.2-hectare plot of land underneath it are registered in the name of Iryna Yevgienko, the wife of journalist Plinsky. She purchased them from 64-year-old Kyiv resident Lyubov Levchenko on June 10, 2020. According to the sale and purchase agreements, the house cost Yevhen Plinsky’s family 58 thousand US dollars, and the land cost 120 thousand US dollars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Where did the journalist get that kind of money? At the exchange rate of the time, this totaled 4 million 770 thousand hryvnias. Plinsky’s wife is an artist, has no business, and judging by her social media, she is probably a housewife who grows flowers and paints at home. According to our data, Plinsky’s official salary at the TV channel at the time of the purchase was 35,245 UAH ($1,270) per month. For this money, he had to support a family with two children, which already seems like a difficult task with such an income. And here is a house and land plot worth almost $200,000!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By the way, this price is clearly understated, because we have the technical specifications of Yevhen Plinsky’s house. The purchase agreement states that it is a garden house. In reality, it is a large two-story cottage on the ground floor with a spacious living room, kitchen, dining room, guest room (or office) and terrace with access to the courtyard overlooking the forest, and three bedrooms and a dressing room on the second floor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As mentioned above, it is almost 300 square meters in total. The real market value of such a house, based on real advertisements<\/a> for the sale of houses in the area, is at least $500,000, but not $58,000 (you can’t buy an apartment for that kind of money even in Kyiv). The fact that the purchase price of the asset was significantly lowered may indicate that the asset was practically fictitiously registered in favor of Plinsky.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How state forests were used by journalists for construction<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

You must admit that something is not clear. The answer to the question of what kind of preferences – a house at a discount – may lie in the following. Two years before journalist Plinsky purchased this house, the media reported<\/a> that he and his friend and then colleague on the air, now known for his treason charges<\/a>, MP Oleksandr Dubinsky, had begun construction of a cottage community near Lake Vita in a forest area. Yes, this is the same town called Kruglik Ozernyi where Plinsky’s family lives today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the information at the time, Dubinsky bought the first plot here back in 2013, where he built a house (another question is where a regular journalist gets his money from), and then allegedly bought several more plots. Local residents were outraged that someone had allowed journalists to build up another green area. \u201cThere was a very beautiful meadow there, poppies were blooming. Last year, they destroyed everything, dug up the bank, fenced it off, dug canals and are now building a cottage community,\u201d the villagers complained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What kind of land was it that was given to two journalists who were reporting on corrupt officials on television, and then given to them for construction in a picturesque location? On the example of the land plot under Plinsky’s house, we learned that Larysa Levchenko, who sold the house with the land to the journalist’s wife, herself bought this land plot in 2014 from a certain Samoilenko V.O., on whose behalf the current deputy of the Borshchahiv village council from the Servant of the People party, Oleksandr Demochko, acted by proxy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Demochko is an interesting character. He was involved in the theft of land<\/a> in Pushcha-Vodytsia in 2010-2013. At that time, hundreds of hectares of land were transferred to the village council, which \u201csawed\u201d them into small plots and handed them over to citizens for free. At the second stage, the land was bought by several people for a pittance. But after some time, a lawsuit began to return the land to the state, during which the original owners of the plots testified that they did not even know that the state had allocated them land.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Apparently, approximately the same scheme was used to allocate a land plot for the construction of the Dubinsky-Plinsky cottage community. As it has become known, the land plot on which Yevhen Plinsky’s house stands is currently involved in criminal proceedings regarding the allocation of land to the Boyar Forest Research Station for illegal possession. In the summer of 2023, the Kyiv-Svyatoshynskyi District Court of Kyiv Oblast ruled to reclaim<\/a> in favor of the state the land plots registered in the names of individuals as a result of illegal actions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the same time, the land plot belonging to Plinsky’s wife was recently seized by the Pechersk District Court of Kyiv on February 13, 2024, at the request of the prosecutor in the framework of criminal proceedings No. 12022000000000593. So today, journalist Plinsky and his family live on the seized land, which is about to be returned to the state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So, how did the once state-owned land, which used to be forests and meadows, turn into a cottage community where \u201canti-corruption journalists\u201d live? As of 2003, 775 hectares of land within the Khotiv village council of the Kyiv-Svyatoshynskyi district of Kyiv region were used by a separate subdivision of the National Agrarian University, the Boyar Forest Research Station.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2008, the Kyiv-Svyatoshynskyi District State Administration addressed the National Agrarian University with a letter requesting that the University and the Boyarska Forest Research Station agree to terminate the right to permanent use of a 12-hectare portion of the land for forestry. In response, the Academic Council of the Agrarian University agreed to withdraw this land from Boyarska LDS’s permanent use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Based on this letter, in February 2010, the Kyiv-Svyatoshyn District State Administration issued a resolution to terminate the right of permanent use of the Boyar Forest Research Station to a part of the 12-hectare land plot and to assign it to the reserve lands of the Khotiv Village Council. According to the investigation, this order, which made the land no longer state-owned, is illegal because, according to Article 142 of the Land Code of Ukraine, the Kyiv-Svyatoshynskyi District State Administration was not the owner of state-owned forestry land to make any decisions on it. According to the law, forest land with an area of more than 1 hectare can only be seized on the basis of a decision of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine, which was not the case in this case.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

B Then, in March 2012, the district administration adopted a resolution approving a land management project to allocate land plots with a total area of 5.8 hectares to 3 Ukrainian citizens and transferring them to them free of charge for personal farming. A month later, all three individuals received state acts for these lands, and changed their designated purpose, divided them into smaller plots and sold them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is unknown who these people were. It is known that one of them was the aforementioned Oleksandr Demochko, who implemented the same scheme of seizing state land in Pushcha-Vodytsia. Did Dubinsky and Plinsky implement this scheme in Kruglyk Ozernyi? It is very likely that they did. After all, there is evidence from local residents as of 2018 that Dubinsky and Plinsky were already building this cottage community at that time, and, as a reminder, Plinsky bought the house with the land at a reduced price in 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This may indicate that Yevhen Plinsky, long before the official acquisition of the land plot with the house in the forest, had a share in the scheme to build the cottage community, and Lyubov Levchenko, who officially sold it to him, could have been a front person to grant his wife the status of a bona fide buyer for further court cases. And the understated value of the transaction may be explained by this, as well as by the desire to pay less taxes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Did Plinsky receive money from Russia?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Be that as it may, the question to the TV presenter remains, so where did the money for such purchases come from with a salary of just over a thousand dollars a month? When you have the airtime of one of the largest TV channels, the recognition and trust of viewers at your disposal, you can tell not only the truth, but you can also spread lies to make money. For money, of course.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Oleksandr Dubinsky learned this well when he hosted the Hroshi program on 1+1 before being elected to the Verkhovna Rada in 2019. The program positioned itself as a project of journalistic investigations, but it irritated the entire journalistic community, which saw that the project was not engaged in investigations, but rather in the production of paid-for materials. The same story with the X-Files program, which was also curated by Dubinsky and hosted by Yevhen Plinsky at the time when he and Dubinsky started a cottage community. Which, it is possible, could have become a place to \u201chide\u201d illegally earned money.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But. Everything could have been so simple, if not for one nuance. Today, Dubinsky is in a pre-trial detention center on suspicion of treason. According<\/a> to the SBU, at least since 2019, as soon as he became an MP, Dubinsky was recruited by the Russian special services and worked as an agent with the call sign \u201cPinocchio\u201d under the supervision of the General Directorate of the Russian General Staff. According to the investigation, Dubinsky’s task was to undermine the socio-political situation in Ukraine and discredit the country abroad. This is what he actually did on the air of his program \u201cDubinisms\u201d on 1+1 TV channel and in his Telegram channel, where he constantly wrote about the allegedly terrible economic and corruption situation in Ukraine. These posts were regularly reposted by the Resident channel<\/a>, which is also linked to the Russian GRU<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The SBU found that Russia allocated $10 million to Dubinsky’s network. For this money, he also held press conferences with a former MP from the Party of Regions and, as we know today, a Russian agent, Andriy Derkach, where they spoke about international corruption and money laundering by the son of US presidential candidate Joe Biden, Hunter, through the gas production company Burisma. Thus, on Moscow’s instructions, they tried to undermine American confidence in Biden and worsen relations between Ukraine and the United States.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dubinsky also spread false information about the massive embezzlement of American aid in Ukraine. In December 2020, he and Derkach sent letters to several U.S. congressmen, which included information about Ukraine’s misuse of U.S. taxpayer funds<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For all this, in January 2021, the United States imposed sanctions on Dubinsky. He was then expelled from the Servant of the People party and arrested in November 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

American biolabs. How Plinsky worked for Russian propaganda<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Yevhen Plinsky was Dubinsky’s official proxy in the 2019 parliamentary elections. And, a participant in his information disinformation campaigns paid for by the Kremlin. In April 2020, Plinsky released a story<\/a> about \u201cAmerican biolabs in Ukraine\u201d in his X-Files program. Yes, the same fake that Kremlin propagandists have been \u201cspinning\u201d for years was aired on national Ukrainian television under the authorship of our hero.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Plinsky said in the story that the Pentagon was allegedly building secret military \u201cbiolabs\u201d in Ukraine, where Americans were creating new viruses, that these labs were leaking viruses that were making Ukrainians sick, and that the Ukrainian government had no access to these labs, which were controlled exclusively by the United States. This absurdity was commented on by a guest of Medvedchuk’s TV channels at the time, Mykhailo Chaplyga, known for his anti-Ukrainian statements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This story was part of an information campaign launched by Viktor Medvedchuk himself, who published his appeal to Zelenskyy on April 15, in which he said that viruses in these laboratories were tested on Ukrainians and that Ukraine was under external influence from the United States – all according to Putin’s methodology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These theses, invented and prescribed in the Kremlin and launched in Ukraine by Medvedchuk, were repeated word for word throughout April 2020 by OPFL deputies, Medvedchuk’s ZIK and 112 TV channels, anonymous telegram channels, former President Yanukovych’s adviser Andriy Portnov, MP Oleksandr Dubinsky<\/a> and his friend and partner Yevhen Plinsky. The SBU, civic activists from StopFake, and the U.S. State Department, which refuted<\/a> the spread of disinformation, had to fight the penetration of Russian propaganda in the Ukrainian information space. As a result, Plinsky’s story was removed<\/a> from the 1+1 YouTube channel. However, the disinformation campaign by Kremlin agents Medvedchuk and Dubinsky was still carried out. With the active assistance and participation of journalist Plinsky. Exactly two months after that, his wife bought land with a house near Kyiv. Is this where the money came from?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This was clearly not the end of the story, as Dubinsky and Plinsky continued to conduct fake information campaigns together. The last known of them was carried out against the National Bank of Ukraine in the spring and summer of 2023, a few months before Dubinsky’s detention. But this time, he was in company not with Medvedchuk, but\u2026 with Mykola Azarov!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It all started with Dubinsky’s posting of a fake on his Telegram channel, where he published a photo of a Rolls-Royce parked near the National Bank with the caption \u201cI want to congratulate Andriy Pyshnyi on the purchase of a new Rolls-Royce, which he now uses to run the National Bank.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This fake news was immediately picked up and \u201cpromoted\u201d by the anonymous telegram channels \u201cLegitimate\u201d and \u201cResident\u201d, which, according<\/a> to the SBU, are funded by Russian special services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In fact, the car in the photo belonged to Hennadiy Vatsak, the owner of the Vatsak company, and it was registered<\/a> in the city of Mohyliv-Podilskyi, Vinnytsia region, where the businessman was born, lives and works<\/a>. The National Bank, of course, denied<\/a> that the car belonged to any of its employees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then the disgraced Azarov \u201cjoined the game\u201d with Russia, stating<\/a> that \u201cUkraine’s economy is in a critical state\u201d because \u201cin June 2022 alone, the NBU printed more than UAH 100 billion to cover government spending, and in total last year the volume of emission was UAH 400 billion,\u201d which was also manipulation and distortion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Later, Yevhen Plinsky joined the campaign and published<\/a> a document on his YouTube channel and Facebook page, the so-called analytical letter of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development regarding the activities of the National Bank of Ukraine. In it, the EBRD allegedly expressed concern about the independence and professionalism of the NBU, the NBU’s influence and pressure on the management of state-owned banks, manual regulation of the industry, and a host of other negative facts. It looked as if the NBU had turned from a regulator into a monster that was about to \u201cbring down\u201d the entire financial system of Ukraine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The media began to disseminate materials from this \u201cdocument,\u201d and the information reached the EBRD itself, which was forced to issue a denial that it was not their document at all, but some kind of \u201cfake.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt’s not that it’s a fake, it’s just some kind of wild thing. The document contains a lot of Russianisms in the construction of phrases, stupid auto-translation in some places\u2026 That is, Plinsky threw in a disinformation aimed at quarreling Ukrainian and international financial institutions, discrediting the activities of the NBU and the Ministry of Finance, which unblocked huge aid from Western partners. Aid that will allow us to continue the war,\u201d expert Anton Shvets described<\/a> the situation at the time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To wit. Yevhen Plinsky repeatedly, for quite a long time, took an active part in the subversive activities of the Russian agent network of his friend, colleague and partner Oleksandr Dubinsky, who had been cooperating with the FSB and the Russian State Security Service for years. Together, they worked off Russian money by spreading disinformation in Ukraine aimed at discrediting the Ukrainian government and sabotaging the domestic socio-political situation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We hope that now the question of how an ordinary Ukrainian journalist could afford a half-million-dollar luxury cottage near Kyiv is out of the question. Not such an ordinary journalist. The only question left is how, with such a record of anti-Ukrainian activity, Yevhen Plinsky, an associate of Dubinsky’s Russian agent, continues to operate quietly and work at the same time in the United News telethon?
